Maasai
Day 1.
Arrive Arusha town and overnight in a relaxing hotel. Enjoy an
African dinner in peaceful surroundings
Day 2.
Travel in a 4x4 to the rural areas of the Simanjiro plains which
have been home to the Maasai for more than 200 years. Visit a Maasai
homestead, seeing how women build their houses and what life is
like inside. In the evening watch the return of the herds, the central
event in the pastoralist day. Enjoy hot Maasai milk before sleeping
in the tents pitched within the homestead outer fence for security
against wildlife.
Day 3.
Arise at dawn to catch the morning milking and accompany the herders
on the first stages of their work, whistling to the cattle as you
go. Learn about the indigenous uses of different plants and their
names as well as visiting sacred sites, with Maasai permission.
Following lunch, a local meal will be prepared of goat meat –
and you will be invited to help dress and prepare the goat. The
evening meal is shared with the whole homestead, al of whom are
invited. Sleep in the tents.
Day 4.
Breakfast on Maasai milk and tea before heading back to town and
onto the next stage of your journey.
